'Om Shanti Om' - the real review is here = 4/10

Skip it if you can, and watch it if you cannot skip it.  I watched it because it was playing 200 meters away from my home, and being single I didn’t have much to do on a Sunday night.

If I grade satisfaction/happiness that one gets by seeing a movie on a ten-point scale, I expected a six but got only a four. Loss of two points. I am sure I will not do worse with Sawanriya (expected is a zero, I am sure I will get about a negative two).  This movie  should go down as the most incorrectly hyped movie of the year 2007 (or that was Ramu's Aag), but on a second thought I guess hyping a movie is ok, it is like marketing a product, which has almost nothing to do with the product.

So what is this movie all about? Farah Khan is like so many other hard working and talented people, who always dream of making movie, but due to spontaneous unfolding of the universe, they ended up doing something else. She became a choreographer, a big time choreographer (Bombay Dreams on the Broadway).  Once she collected lot of money, she decided to spend it on her dream i.e.  to make movies. This movie (her second attempt, first you don’t even want to know) is a random sketch of her fantasy.  She surely had been very clever in making her point through dialogs in the movie that even though this story does not make sense, you should watch it because you watch so many other things like one hero fighting ten goondas. What she misses here is that scenes like a hero fighting ten goondas is a dramatic exaggeration of confrontation between hero and goondas, while her reincarnation stuff (which is anyway totally flicked from an old classic) is not even something that dreams are made of.

So, yes the story is not original, it has strong inspiration from classical movie Karz (even filming of some important scenes of OmShO will remind you of this movie).  Even though Farah Khan had done her best to shout over the rooftops to deny this, which was expected, we all know the truth now.  This movie is a time pass, though Deepika Padukone is wasted in her debut movie.  Hum to bas yahi sochte rah gaye… ki ye kaisi picture banayi hai, mere dost!

PS: the best part of the picture is the end credit where you get to see faces of lots of guys from behind the screen, which is original and sweet.

    Metrolife and Dil Dosti Etc.

It is easy to live when your character is weak, and easy to die when it is strong. Luckily that is the natural order of things, otherwise the world would have run out of its people.

    The twenty-three questions

I am not into reading books, but when I see a thin and nice book, I do give it my two minutes. While doing that I came across following twenty three questions. They are from a book titled "Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs: A Low Culture Manifesto" by Chuck Kolestram. I have no idea how good or bad this book is or the author is. However, the list of twenty three questions that he had in the book are awesome. They are so good that I spend my time in finding them without wasting my money, and compiling them here for all of you to read and try to answer them in your leisure time. You are most welcome to reply on this blog with your answer. I believe that answer to these question do tell a lot of about the person's behavior.

Wikipedia Link to "Sex, Drugs... Puff"

    1. Let us assume you met a simple magician. He can do five simple tricks—he can pull a rabbit out of his hat, he can make a coin disappear, he can  turn the ace of spades to a Joker card, and two others similar tricks. These are his only tricks, and he cannot learn any more. HOWEVER he is doing these tricks with real magic. It is not an illusion; he can actually conjure the bunny out of the ether and he can move the coin through space. He is legitimately magical, but extremely limited in scope and influence. Would this person be more impressive than Albert Einstein?

    2. Let us assume a fully grown and completely healthy horse with his hooves shackled to the ground with head held in place with thick rope. He is conscious and upright, but totally immobile. And let us assume that every political prisoner on earth will be released from captivity if you can kick this horse to death in less than twenty minutes. You are allowed to wear steel-toed boots. Would you attempt to do this?

    3. Let us assume there are two open boxes on a table. In one box there is a turtle, in the other box there is Adolf Hitler’s skull. You have to select one of these two items for your home. If you select the turtle you must keep it and ensure it is alive for two years, else you will be fined $999 by the state. If you select the skull you must display it in your living room for same amount of time, although you will be paid $120/month. Display should not be politically biased. Which option do you select?

    4. Genetic Engineers at John Hopkins announce that they have developed a so-called super gorilla. It cannot speak, but has a sign language lexicon of over thousand words, an IQ of 85, and a sense of self awareness. The creature, who weighs almost seven hundred pounds, becomes fascinated with football and aspires to play at its highest level and quickly develops the basic skills of a defensive player. ESPN analyst Tom Jackson speculates that this super gorilla would be “borderline unblockable” and would likely average six sacks a game. Meanwhile, the gorilla has made it clear he would never intentionally injure any opponent. You are the commissioner of the NFL: Would you allow the gorilla to sign with the Oakland Raiders?

    5. You meet your soul mate. However there is a catch: Every three years someone will break both of your soul mate’s collarbones with a crescent wrench, and there is only one way to stop this from happening: you must swallow a pill the will make all the music, whether it is radio, or TV or movie, you hear for rest of your life sound as if it is being sung by me (and people say my singing voice is unbearable). Would you swallow the pill?

    6. At long last, someone invents a dream VCR. This machine can tape an entire evening of your dreams, which you can watch at your leisure. However, the inventor of the VCR will only allow you to watch the recording in the same room as your family and your closest friends. And if you don’t agree to this, you cannot use this VCR. Would you still do this?

    7. Defying all expectations, a group of Scottish marine biologist captures a live Loch Ness Monster. In equally rarity, the same day a hunter in the Pacific Northwest shoots a Sasquatch on the thigh and takes it into captivity. These events happen on the same afternoon. That evening the president announces he has thyroid cancer and will undergo a biopsy next week. You are the front-page editor of the New York Times: What do you play as the biggest story?

    8. You meet the perfect person: Romantically, this is your ideal partner. You find them physically attractive, intellectually appealing, consistently funny, and deeply compassionate. But they have one quirk: your perfect person is obsessed with Jim Henson's gothic puppet fantasy The Dark Crystal. They watch it once a month and all any conversation involves references to it, occasionally talking about a deeper philosophy. Would this be enough for you to stop you from marrying this individual?

    9. A novel "Interior Mirror" is released to mammoth commercial success. Though no one can prove a direct scientific link a trend emerges: almost thirty percent of the people who read this novel become immediately homosexual. Many people thank the book for helping them reach this conclusion about their sexuality. The novel Interior Mirror is a crime novel with no homoerotic content and was written by a straight man. Would this phenomenon increase the likelihood of you reading this book?

    10. Consider the opening riff to the Barracuda on Heart's Little Queen album, as well as the quote from a novel "You are not the kind of guy who would be in a place like this at this time of the morning...." Which of these two introductions is a higher form of art?

    11. You are watching a gripping movie in a crowded theatre with your partner. With twenty minutes left in the film you have an undeniable feeling that your mother has just died. There is no logical reason for this, but you are certain. There is no evidence of this, and your mother has not been ill. Would you finish watching the movie, or immediately exit the crowded theatre?

    12. You meet a wizard downtown. The wizard tells you that he can make you more attractive. When you question the process, the wizard points you to a random person on the street and says "I will now make them a dollar more attractive." He waves a magic wand. Ostensibly, this person does not change at all, but somehow this person is slightly more appealing. There is no tangible change to reflect his but they are undeniably sexier. The wizard has one rule though: you can only pay him once, one lump sum up front. How much cash do you give the wizard?

    13. Every person you have ever slept with is at a banquet and you are the guest of honor. No one is in attendance except you, your former lovers and the catering service. After the meal you are asked to make a fifteen-minute speech to the assembly. What would you talk about?

    14. Cats suddenly can read at the twelfth grade level. They cannot talk or write but can read and understand the text. Many cats love this new skill as it gives them something to do all day, while they are also frustrated as they cannot express themselves and get depressed. Do you think the average cat would enjoy Garfield or would cats find this to be an insulting caricature?

    15. You have a brain tumor. You have no discomfort, but with this tumor will unquestionably kill you in six months. Your life can be saved by an operation. The operation will require an incision to your frontal lobe. Thus after the surgery you will have a perfectly functioning body but you will be significantly less intelligent, less logical and you will have a terrible memory. The surgery is in two weeks. How you spend the next 14 days?

    16. Someone builds an optical portal which allows you to see your own life in the future. You can only look into it for 30 seconds. When you finally peer into the ball you see yourself sitting alone on the sofa decades older then you are today. You are watching Canadian Football, and you are extremely happy. You are wearing a CFL jersey, your sofa is surrounded by books and magazines on the CFL, and there are CFL pennants covering your walls. You have become obsessed with Canadian Football. The future is static and absolute; no matter what you do, this will happen. The next day you are flipping through the channels and randomly come across a CFL game between the Toronto Argonauts and the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Knowing your inevitable future, would you watch it?

    17. You are sitting in an empty bar, in a lonely town you have never been to before, drinking whisky with a soft-spoken acquaintance you barely know. After thirty minutes a man walks in the bar and sits alone, you ask your friend about him. He tells you that this man is a man with a past. Five minutes later another man walks in and sits alone. You ask your friend about him. He tells you that this man is a man with no past. Of the two men, which one do you trust less?

    18. You won a prize with two options: The first option is one year in Europe trip with monthly stipend of $2000 per month and the option two is ten minutes on the moon. Which of the two options do you choose?

    19. Your best friend is visiting your place and is sleeping on your living room floor. Somehow you come to know that this friend is going to die unless you kick them as hard as you can in their ribcage. If you do not kick them, then they will never wake up. However, once they get up after you kick them, you cannot explain them with the true reason, and if you do that they will die. So you must kick them in the ribcage and cannot tell them why. What excuse do you fabricate to explain this attack?

    20. Let us assume that there are two unauthorized movies being made about your life.  The first is an independently released documentary comprised of interviews with your friends and family and bootlegs footage from your actual life. Critics are describing it as "brutally honest and relentlessly fair". Meanwhile, Columbia Tri-Star has produced a big budget biopic with huge Hollywood stars as you and all your acquaintances; though the movie is based on actual events, the screenwriters have taken some liberties to dramatize the story. Critics are split on the artistic merit, but audiences love it. Which film would you be most interested in seeing?

    21. Imagine you could go back to the age of five and relive rest of your life, without loss of your memory till date. You will re-experience your entire adolescence with both the cognitive ability of an adult and the memories of everything you've learned by living your life previously. Would you lose you virginity earlier or later then the first time around (and by how many years e.g. earlier by 10 years is a good answer)?

    22. You work in an office. Generally, you are popular among your coworkers. You discover that there are two rumors about you. The first is that you got drunk at the office holiday party and had sex with your married coworker. This rumor is true, but most people don’t believe it. The second rumor is that you have been stealing hundred of dollars of office supplies and then selling them to cover a gambling debt. This rumor is false, but everyone assumes it is factual. Which of these rumors is most troubling to you?

    23. Consider this possibility: a) Think about a deceased TV star John Ritter. b) Pretend that Ritter never become famous. Pretend he was never affected by the trappings of fame, and try to imagine what his personality would have been like. c) Now imagine that this not-famous person is a character in a situation comedy. d) You are also a character in this sitcom, and not-famous Ritter is your father. E) However, the sitcom is your actual life. In other word you are living inside a sitcom. Everything about your life is a construction featuring the not-famous John Ritter as himself (playing your TV father). This is not a sitcom; this is your real life. How would you feel about this?

    Phase Transition

A major phase transition is about to get over. It took almost three months and that should explain my absence from the blogging. It was busy time, but very exciting. I had my PhD defense in May, June went in wrapping up the Thesis work followed by relocating to a new city for a new job. Settling in the new job, getting a hold of a new life. That was the busy part of it. Exciting part is the new place is lot bigger than my previous place, it is a big city minus the high-risers. Lots of Indian food places, grocery are available in a radius of few miles, other than so many great Malls for shopping all around. This is Olathe, a suburb of Kansas City. I have already got hooked to 98.1 while driving to anywhere. I am really looking forward to sunshiny days of new life after seeing lots of snowy days of student life. Student life is a lifestyle that should be lived as much as one can, it is the one thing that i will miss for sure. And those amazing friends who have been there in good times for sure, but also in not-so-good times and that is what matters the most.

It just does not make sense

“I finally came to the conclusion that maybe he was right maybe there are no such things as heroes maybe there are just people like my dad, I finally came to understand why they were so uncomfortable being called heroes. Heroes are something we create, something we need. It's a way for us to understand what is almost incomprehensible, how people could sacrifice so much for us, but for my dad and these men the risks they took, the wounds they suffered, they did that for their buddies, they may have fought for their country but they died for their friends. For the man in front for the man beside him, and if we wish to truly honor these men we should remember them the way they really were the way my dad remembered them. – Flags of Our Fathers (2007)”

This succinctly describes not one but two movies – twin movies I should say – ‘Flags of Our Fathers’ and ‘Letters from Iwo Jima’. They are no tearjerkers, they are the heartbleeders. It is an attempt to do something that is truly beyond imagination and fantasy, how some people can DIE for rest of us. Nobody knows the answer to this but only few agree that they do not the answer. War is like a coin with two faces, one side having the real cost on it and the other side having some symbol. Former is a side that can only be lived (and died) while the later is one projected by the rulers in front of people of the nation for all good reasons such as to meet the cost of the war so that the nation can be safe. Mind you this cost is not only financial but also social, it makes us poorer, destroys existing infrastructure and negates the progress of the society. What is perplexing here is when this loss of life in a war and related cost is such a common knowledge, why do people still decide to fight with each other. I do understand there are disputes but with such a long and abundant history of war the whole world should try to learn how to avoid wars. That is a difficult problem, more difficult than inventing an atomic bomb but the final solution has to be of that difficult problem. Bottom-line is that those who have died in wars - do not matter which side - deserved a full life and their families deserved a normal life.

    We don't need no guns

What happened in Virginia Tech on April 16th morning could have very well happened in any other university, and if that were my university then I could have been one of those who died in that massacre. Thirty three innocent kids were shot dead by one lunatic guy for none of their fault! Nothing can get worse than this. How did the killer become so insane to kill 33 strangers and how did he acquire those two guns were two very important questions that hopefully would get answered in due time to bring the case to a closure. But these answers would not be of much use in avoiding such incidences in future. What might help are two questions derived from the previous questions, firstly how to stop student on campus from loosing their sanity and secondly how to stop availability of guns in a normal society. First question needs to be answered at local level i.e. at school level, by keenly observing folks with any unusual behavior (without invading anyone’s privacy), making counseling service more active and vigorous, etc. The second issue of having guns being easily available should also be addressed once and for all in favor of a policy of not selling guns in super-marts. Let us learn a lesson from this massacre, and make our best not to let this happen again in future. That will be the best way to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in this incidence.

    The second 10-year plan.

After super success of first 10-year plan, here is another attempt to see what I want from life in the next 10 years of my life.

    1. To amass one million dollars in cash
    2. To play tennis in a tournament
    3. To fly a jet over Kansas City
    4. To swim in an ocean
    5. To visit South America/Europe
    6. To have a few cool kids
    7. To go back to India
    8. To become more humane
    9. TBALAPN
    10. TBALAPN

One thing common in all of above is that I have to start from scratch for each of them, and then they are probably listed in increasing order of difficulty. Amen!

TBALAPN=to be added later as per need

The Fountainhead - There ain't no water anymore.

Yes. A fountainhead which does not spring water anymore is nothing but a reminiscent of past, with no bearing on present and future. The Fountainhead of Ayn Rand lost its water long back (assuming it had lot of water when it was written). She says a building is a function of its purpose, I say her fiction is a function of her time and her past. I agree I have minimal knowledge of her time and her past but I am sure of my time, and in my time society is never an enemy of geniuses and one need not to sacrifice self to help the society. A person who does not have an established self is not even capable of contributing towards the society. I know lot of people who are brilliant and who do not compromise with the work ethics; and still they take time to help others around them in their own ways. That is real genius. Society is an act of symbiosis between different individuals, each contributing based on their capacities and constraints. Society expects only from those who can help themselves, others are expected to try to help themselves and improve. A society has never been a fair playground. There is a theory of dependency which says interdependence is an interaction between independent people and dependent people are not even independent. How to deal with those people who always seek help without trying to be better and become parasite in the society is a different problem altogether.

I am not commenting on her writing, it might be true when she wrote it. I am commenting on the reading by people who converted that work of fiction into a philosophy, for this so called philosophy is totally flawed in present time. It has no vision of interdependence as if being independent is everything and the pursuit of happiness in one’s life should end there. Thanks heaven it is not, but it is indeed prerequisite for the next stage of interdependence. Only happy people can increase others happiness.

For me the hero of The Fountainhead is Mr. Gail Wynand.  The man who redeemed his self by sacrificing himself for someone else. And that is the point.

A linky for those who never read the book (don’t worry, you didn’t miss anything) = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fountainhead

[Unsung Heroes] Inventor of TV Remote died.

Robert Adler died this Thursday at the age of 93. His one outstanding contribution among his other 180 plus inventions is our dear TV Remote control (remote), invented almost 50 years back in collaboration with his fellow engineer. The remote happens to be an underrated yet heavily used household device and the only way to appreciate a remote is try to watch TV one day without using it (in case you have memories of searching remote control in every nook and corner of your house, you have a ballpark estimate of its importance). Thanks to him for handing over a power in our hands so that we can easily switch away from ubiquitous ad breaks, we can also surf a range of TV channels in less than a minute without moving ourselves (making some couch potatoes). He did get an Emmy in 1997 for his the most important invention. So, let’s mute our TVs for a minute using that remote.

More about him here -> http://www.todaystmj4.com/news/tech/5903576.html

God-like truth is the beauty worth living for.

Water (2005) is a movie by Deepa Mehta about widows in pre-independence India, who were forced by men to live in inhuman condition for the rest of their lives (whether it is in ‘vidhwa ashram’ or home). It will not come as a surprise if in rural part of India i.e. two-third of India, widows are still facing this 2000 year old curse in letter and spirit. Anyways following are my two cents:

    1. It is not worth the Oscar nomination in a foreign film category. For it is not perfectly made, there are clear signs that this is not shot in the banks of river Ganga, all the folks in the movie (except the star cast) were south Indians (or Sri Lankan). Acting is superb by all the actors, especially the little girl. But, nothing is exceptional. Maybe they nominated it just because it is an entry form Canada and not India. It surely had exceptional idea of story, but movie is not Oscar-type. By Oscar-type I meant movies like Apu’s trilogy.
    2. This movie was shot in Sri Lanka because it was not allowed by Hindu leaders to shoot in India as they found it offensive!!! I think they could not tolerate the pain of those widows, even if they were acting and not real widows. This clearly shows the concern of Indian society for women.

    IMDB Link for Water (2005) = http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0240200/

PS: Mahatma Ghandi ji appears in the climax scene of movie and really does the job of concluding the movie. Truth is God, and thus by following truth, we do not violate any Shastra or any other holy scripture.

Lost in Indian streets in New Zealand!

How about a New Zealand visa for visiting Khandallah!

Broadmeadows, Wellington NZ has something special to notice for people form Indian subcontinent. It has lots of streets named after places in Indian subcontinent e.g. Kanpur Rd, Gaya Grove, Satara Cr etc. Here is the Google maps link for you to see for yourself.

    http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=broadmeadows%2C%20new%20zealand&btnG=Search&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl

Surely a place to visit if you happen to be in or around Wellington, which has a very good Indian community.

    Towards a stronger world.

This is a tale of two taxi drivers. Vindo Mago and Osama Chowdhury, they surely do not know each other, and live almost 3000 miles apart.
We will start with Chowdhary ji. (Ch*dh?r$ can be written in so many ways,  by appropriately choosing for *, ? and $). So one fine day in New York City, he was driving an old american lady to an apartment building and the fare came to $10.70. The lady paid a tip of just 30 cents, making it a total of $11. Had it been an old indian lady, it would have make some sense giving $11, because its a 'shubh' number. Anyways, he did not mind that tip becuase there were several genuine possibilities for her action, such as she did not have money, her mind was somewhere else etc. etc. But, that is not why I am telling this story. The old lady happened to forget her bag in the boot of the taxi, which Chowdhury discovered several hours after dropping her. He took all efforts to make sure that the bag reaches her owner. He knew the apartment building where he dropped her but not the apartment, so he went to the office of his taxi company, found the contact number of her mother in Texas on the bag, made a call so that the old lady can come and pick her bag from the office. She came within few hours, and got her bag from a taxi driver whom she paid a tip of 30 cents. She gave him a gift of $100, which he later accepted to cover the cost of fare he lost during the time he was looking for her. Ok, so this lady was a jeweler. The bag had 31 diamond rings in it and he knew it. And, this is a true story.
Three days after that one fine day in Seattle, Vinod Mago, the hero number two of this tale, did almost same thing. After dropping one passenger to Sea-Tac (Seattle-Tacoma International Airport), he found that Mr. Passenger had forgot his big fat wallet in the taxi, which had lots of fifty and hundred dollar bills amounting to $5950. Rest you can guess. Another true story it is.
These are just two samples of events happening all over the world, in every country. It is one of the ways Nature tries to keep us all sane and happy. I am equally sure that there are several folks who drive their strength from people like Mago and Chowdhury.

    Ambiguity of life.

This is about those incidences that happen in our daily lives, in which people involved in them perceive them in totally different ways. A particualr incidence may have dramatically different significance for different subjects. For one person it could be an outcome of a life-long wait, and for other person it could be an insignificant disturbance not worth a look. Latter's obliviousness to the incidence is natural. And, that is a tragedy.

Such events are so natural that they are bound to happen. I am sure I myself must have brushed a few people in my life whom I cannot recall for I never noticed them at the first place, but they must have noticed me. My only worry is I might have failed to live upto their expectation at that moment, in case they had any. And, that would be another tragedy.

This defintions should exclude those events in which one person intentionally remains anonymous, and thus causing other person not to appreciate the gravity of the incidence. Formers are called angels; and latters are people like you and me. Other exceptions to this definition are also possible for we are talking of Life, whose diversity matches only the size of our universe.

    back from India

It was a very nice trip... good and equally hectic. i went to delhi/noida/gurgaon(the NCR, natioanl capital region) met with old friends there who are happily settled in software industries... then went to chennai/banglore too for the same.. meeting more people. other than this, it was all at Kanpur.. no time to watch movies.. busy meeting relatives.. had to go to banks to open some accounts etc. .. other family businesses.. couple of weeks are very less for family matters. but, all is good if the end is great :)
About, India. It is heavily under construction. Some cities are really hopeful cases. Some are equally hopeless. And, that is the tragedy with a country like India. But, I am an eternal optimist.

    My India Trip

Finally, I am leaving for my India... my third trip during last 5 years since I came here. I might become less accessible during July and August.
I am really excited to meet my parents, sister and her family especially a cute niece; and my two brothers. And, all indian food, and life style, i do miss all of that.  I am also going to meet a lots of my old buddies.

    The Braveheart

MUKHTARAN BIBI (also known as mukhtaran mai, mai = mother in local languague)

She is a woman from Pakistan, who was sentenced by the tribal council of her village to be gang raped, for a crime that she has nothing to do. The council said that her 12-year old brother was having an affair with a woman of an influential clan, but in reality as it turned out later in the court that this was a coverup to hide a sexual attack on her brother!

The rape victim who fought back.

She did not go hiding, instead she stood up and went to police. The is brave, if you know the context as well as the pretext. Here is some more. She gets some financial help from all over the world, and she use all that for the school that she is running. Later on she was invited to USA for a talk, but Pakistan goverment denied her permission to go abroad. [ I stopped Mai from going abroad: president Musharaff]

JUNE 2005: Rapists freed and Mukhtaran under House arrest. Mukhtaran put on Exit control list(ECL). Muktaran is outraged.

MARCH 2005: The Multan bench of the Lahore High Court acquitted five of the six convicts, while deciding appeals against the judgement of the anti-terrorism court. The death sentence of the sixth convict was changed into life term.

2004: Two years after the gang rape, two men of the Matsoi tribe were sentenced to imprisonment for sodomising Shakur, Mukhtaran's 12 yr old brother.

AUGUST 2002: The uproar across Pakistan came with an intensity that made her case impossible for officials to overlook. Her case was taken up by the non-governmental Human Rights Commission of Pakistan and the perpetrators were tried and convicted in anti-terrorism courts. Death sentences were handed down to six found guilty by anti-terrorism court.

JUNE 2002: Pakistani village Meerwala - A young boy is sodomized by men from Mastoi tribe. When the boy thretened to report the incident, the Mastoi men called the tribal council (jirga) and accused the boy of raping a Mastoi girl. At the conclusion of the meeting, the boy's family was told that the Mastois would forgive the boy if his sister, Mukhtaran Mai, came before the council to plead for clemency on her brother's behalf. When the sister was brought to the council, however, four of the Mastoi men took her to a nearby house and gang-raped her—as per the council's decree.

    Brain n Sex

My first thought was that Brain (in its size, functioning and overall performance) does not depend on the sex of a person. But, this is not exactly true. Size and the overall performance of the brain is almost same among male and fem. It is the way it uses that size to output same performance is what differentiates them.

The human brain is composed of two types of tissue--gray matter and white matter. While men and women have about the same amount of gray matter and white matter, men appear to use more gray matter, while women use more white matter. Before we proceed further, it's important to note that while the two genders may think differently, this does not affect their intellectual performance or overall intelligence.

What is the difference between gray matter and white matter? Gray is central to processing information and plays a vital role in aiding skills such as mathematics, map-reading, and intellectual thought. White matter connects the brain's processing centers and is central to emotional thinking, use of language, and the ability to do more than one thing at once. Because women use less gray matter--critical to map-reading--they tend to have more difficulty with this skill than men.

Brain-imaging studies suggest that both sexes exploit these differences to their benefit. UCLA researchers have done brain scans of men and women who scored in the top 1 percent on the math section of the SAT. As they worked on math problems, the men heavily relied on the gray matter in the brain’s parietal and cerebral cortices. Women showed greater activity in areas dominated by the well-connected white matter.

"Maybe they’re doing the math using the white matter," Haier said. "It’s not completely unreasonable."

So men and women appear to use their brains differently in some situations. Does that make any difference in how smart they are?

The short answer is no. Average IQ is the same among men and women.

Debate continues over gender gap in scientific fields

So, this is true in general.
